Celebrating Thirty Years of Gifts
The first Cardinal’s Awards Dinner was held in 1990. Over the thirty years, 171 extraordinary women and men, not all Catholics, have been recognized for the gift they are to their faith and to our community. This event began when Cardinal Mahony ask Sister Mary Jean to plan an evening to salute the good work of the lay people of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. During the 1990’s many parishes, detention ministry programs, the earthquake relief fund and the House of Prayer for Priests were beneficiaries. The early 2000’s schools and parishes, the retirement fund for religious, and social services were chosen.
Mid-2000’s to present, six preschools were blessed with capital funds. Then we turned our attention to the formation of priests, Juan Diego House and St. John’s were given funds. Good Shepherd Center, Pregnancy Help Center, Elizabeth Ann Seton Residence and other social services took priority. In 2018 Christian Service 4Life, City of Saints Teen conference, NET, SCuppers and TACSC, all organizations serving teens and college age students, were given substantial grants.
Little children, beginning their academic life give us great joy. Funding from the 2019 awards dinner went to St. Patrick in North Hollywood (San Fernando Region) and La Purisima in Lompoc (Santa Barbara Region) for their preschool programs.
And the 2020 awards dinners proceeds will be distributed to San Antonio de Padua in Boyle Heights, San Gabriel region; Ascension School, Our Lady of the Angels region; and, St. Albert the Great, San Pedro region.
It is a joy to know that the most pivotal opportunity a child can receive is beginning their educational journey in Catholic School. We know you agree!
