Guardian Angel Catholic Church, Pacoima
It was almost seventy years ago, amidst orange groves and olive orchards, that Guardian Angel Catholic Church set out to serve the faithful of the San Fernando Valley. The first Mass was celebrated in the church on March 19, 1929. Bishop Cantwell dedicated the church in 1929, making it a Mission Church of St. Ferdinand’s in San Fernando serving about 100 families.
In 2005, Cardinal Roger Mahony presented Guardian Angel Parish with a check in the amount of $650,000, the proceeds from that year’s Awards Dinner. These funds were earmarked for the construction of a new church. The parish had raised over $2.3 million. However, to preserve their existing site plan, they were forced to use $1.4 million to purchase a parcel of adjacent land, depleting their capital for construction.
The 2011 dinner will depart briefly from supporting early childhood education by creating preschools, to focus on helping Guardian Angel once again.
His Eminence, Cardinal Roger Mahony, Coadjutor Archbishop José Gomez, Bishop Gerald Wilkerson, Guardian Angel pastor, Fr. Steven Guitron, and the members of the Awards Committee invite you to reach deeply into your heart. As a caring Catholic community, we come together in support to give seats of worship to our brothers and sisters in Christ.
